Braces and retainers work tirelessly to create your dream smile, but sometimes, things don’t go according to plan. Orthodontic emergencies, while not super common (studies show they only affect around 5% of patients), can be stressful and uncomfortable. Don’t panic! Here’s a guide to handling some common orthodontic emergencies and what to do next.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies:

  • Loose or Broken Bracket: This is the most frequent emergency, affecting up to 1% of patients. Don’t try to fix it yourself! If the bracket is still attached to the wire, use orthodontic wax to cover the sharp edges and prevent irritation. If the bracket is completely loose or the wire is poking out, call your orthodontist for an Emergency Orthodontic Treatment appointment.
  • Poking Wire: A loose wire can irritate your gums or cheeks. Use orthodontic wax to cover the end of the wire and gently push it back into place if possible. If it’s causing significant discomfort or you can’t reposition it, call your orthodontist for an Emergency Orthodontic Treatment appointment.
  • Lost Aligner: While not technically an emergency, losing an aligner can disrupt your treatment plan. If you have a spare aligner, wear that one until you can find the lost one or get a replacement from your orthodontist.
  • Mouth Soreness: New braces or a recent tightening can cause temporary soreness. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help. If the discomfort is severe or persists for more than a few days, consult your orthodontist.

What NOT to Do During an Orthodontic Emergency:

  • Don’t use household tools like pliers or tweezers to try and fix your braces. This can damage the wires or brackets and worsen the problem.
  • Don’t cut the wire yourself. This can disrupt your treatment plan and potentially damage your teeth.
  • Don’t ignore the problem. Even if the discomfort seems minor, it’s best to contact your orthodontist to get it checked out.

How to Prepare for Orthodontic Emergencies:

  • Get an Orthodontic Emergency Kit: Most orthodontists provide kits with tools like wax, floss threaders, and a small mirror to address minor issues.
  • Keep Your Orthodontist’s Contact Information Handy: Make sure you have your orthodontist’s phone number and emergency contact information readily available.
  • Schedule Regular Checkups: Regular appointments allow your orthodontist to monitor your progress and address any potential problems before they become emergencies.

Remember: While orthodontic emergencies can happen, staying calm and knowing what to do can help minimize the stress and discomfort. By following these tips and scheduling regular checkups, you can ensure your orthodontic journey remains a smooth path to your perfect smile.
